Why make blankets for dogs?

First and foremost, I love dogs…and I have a passion for textiles. I buy fabric the way Carrie Bradshaw buys shoes. Marrying the two together seemed like the logical thing to do. Plus, I can’t sew anything that has buttons, zippers, collars or inseams. However, I can sew a straight line.

What are the blankets’ washing instructions?

I don’t use any fabric that cannot be washed. To have a blanket for a puppy that needs dry cleaning is just plain dumb. Just toss each blanket in a cold wash load as needed with your regular detergent. You can use the dryer with these blankets, but lying them out flat to dry will increase their lifespan. I like to lay them out to dry in the sun so they smell clean and fresh for my dogs.

How big are the blankets?

I vary the size of the blankets depending on how much of the fabric I have to work with. I keep in mind that there are some mighty big dogs out there and some tiny little pups. Sometimes I may start out making medium size blanket and in the process it takes on a life of its own and I end up with a blanket for BigFoot. Hey, he’s a furry kid too.

What is repurposed fabric?

I love to shop at thrift stores for fabric. Now rarely will you go into one and find a bolt of fabric on the shelf. That’s not what I’m looking for anyway. I look at all the garments hanging on a rack, but I’m not seeing a dress or skirt. I’m seeing the potential of that fabric. When I find a choice garment, I buy it, take it home and begin to harvest it. I remove all buttons, and any lace or appliqués. I then cut it down to a manageable size. Eventually it will become a part of a one-of-a-kind Ginger Snips Blanket.

Who is Ginger, Monte and Mollee?

I’m a retired flight attendant living in Manhattan Beach, Ca. I’m a mother of two wonderful adult children: my son Dan who is my kindred spirit, and my beautiful daughter Christene, who gave me the best gift of all: my granddaughter Danielle, who is now 16.

I have some totally awesome people in my life who inspire and motivate me. My daughter-in-law, Jill has given me the courage to go out and actually make money doing the things I love to do.

And finally, I’m the pet parent to Monte and Mollee, my two Maltese “kids.” Monte, age 5, is my big boy; he is just a bit larger than the average Maltese, weighing 11 pounds. He hates garbage cans and anyone who knocks on the front door. Any attempt to train him not to bark when he hears someone rolling their garbage can out to the curb, or when he hears a knock at all, is an exercise in futility.

My little girl Mollee, age 10 months, tops the scales at 6 pounds. She likes to try out each blanket I make: so know that each blanket offered has passed the most vigorous test of comfort and snugglyness.

What kind of dogs like the blankets?

I believe just about any dog would enjoy my blankets. Whether they want a place to lie down or want to be wrapped in a blanket after a bath, my blankets will fit the bill. Why? Because dogs have very good instincts and they’ll instinctively know that this blankie was made with love.

What else do you plan to make?

I’m now working on a pattern that will allow me to make kennel and crate covers. Monte and Molle each have a Petmate wire training kennel that they sleep in. The two black wire kennels in my bedroom just don’t go with my Pottery Barn Duvet, so I’m now in the process of making covers for each kennel. I am making kennel pads as well. I’m also designing unique, couture pet collars to go with the fashionable “look” of your pet. The fun never ends. :-)

Can you customize a GingerSnips blanket for my dog?

Absolutely. Just tell me what you would like. I can even add the name of your “child.”

I have a pet shop; can I sell your blankets and pet creations?

Most likely. Please email me on that at Ginger AT kidsinfurcoats DOT com. I look forward to your email!

How long does it take you to make a blanket?

The time varies, depending on size and style. Some, such as the fleece blankets, take only a few hours. Others, depending on how much hand stitching I do, can take several days. Remember, this is not a factory. I make all these creations myself, at home, with love for all animals in mind.
